>On this topic, personally, contrary to the (wonderful) cut up mayhem that >the rest of the mixes contain, my favorite mix of this set is the J. >McEntire Tortoise mix. Really smooth, dubby, and with atmosphere. I find >myself pulling that piece of vinyl just to hear that mix.I haven't been >exposed to too much Tortoise's stuff (except for some >remix/collaborations). Can someone who has heard both please compare the >above remix with their native sound? I'll try. The remix is more representative of John on his own, rather than Tortoise as a whole. The track here is more groove orientated and structure than Tortoise, while still retaining that live dubby kind of feel. The Tortoise on 'Millions Now Living Will Never Die' sound is an even more organic sound with lots going on - guitar, xylophones, background noise and treatments alongside Johns odd synth pad type effects. Basically it's more a 'band' sound, spontaneous but structured. On first listen to Millions it seemed like a lot of happy accidents, but on further listens I found Tortoise to be very much in control of their music. They know exactly what they are doing alongside and work tightly as a band (compounded by seeing them live). I prefer this LP to the McEntire solo remixes I've heard (Coldcut was pretty good, Stereolab was pretty dull and Red Snapper I liked a lot). 'Millions' is the LP to get, IMO. Wasn't much keen on their first album (a bit half formed to these ears). Gb.
